State election commission (SEC) has postponed elections in the 177 seats of the municipal corporations after nearly 300 candidates approached their local courts on various issues, subsequently delaying the electoral procedure.

The elections will now take place on December 11 and 13 instead of the December 8. The postponement has disturbed the schedule of the political parties and administrative line-up ahead of the winter session of the state legislature.

Earlier, the SEC announced elections to 188 municipal corporations to be held on December 8 and to eight councils on December 23. The councils whose terms are ending on December 16 will now have the elections on December 11 and December 13.

An official from the election commission said that nearly 300 candidates have moved court on various issues and this has led to the procedural delay. While some candidates have appealed over issues relating to the caste-verification certificate, some others had issues related to multiple candidature in their wards.

Since the courts took four to five days for the ruling, the procedure of withdrawal of nomination and scrutiny by authorities had to be withheld.

Further, the political and administrative schedule of the parties and the state government has collapsed. A Mantralaya official said that postponement of the election by four days means no administrative work for those many more days.

“Chief minister has been touring the state for over last 10 days now. So is the case with almost all the ministers with the state cabinet not having met this week. Also, no major decisions have been taken for last few weeks due to the code of conduct being in force,” he said.

Political parties will also have to rescheduled the campaign of their leaders due to the additional four days they get. A Congress leader said, “The campaign deadline ends on December 10 and the winter session starts on December 12. This means the parties will hardly get any time to decide on the strategies.”
