An FYJC student in Vile Parle was not allowed to take her college exam on Tuesday after her parents wrote a letter asking the college to deny her permission for the same.

The girl, Deepali Katke, 18, got married in court without seeking her parents’ permission after which her parents approached her college. The college claimed, however, that the girl did not meet the attendance requirement needed to appear for the exam. She was later allowed to write her exam after the deputy director’s office intervened.

Katke was the first year student of LJNJ Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Vile Parle, who recently got married to her boyfriend. On Tuesday, when she reached the college campus to appear for her exams, she was denied permission. Her father-in-law said, “The college did not allow her to write the exams on frivolous grounds. She was of legitimate age when she got married.”

The boy’s family approached the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) to seek intervention in the matter. Sainath Durge, from MNVS, said, “Whatever the girl has done in her private life should not have affected her studies. The college had no business to interfere in her personal matter even if the parents had an objection. We asked the deputy director’s office to intervene in the matter and the college allowed her to answer the paper.”

According to an official from the deputy director’s office, “The college refused to allow her to write the exam because there was a police complaint involved. The parents had lodged a complaint with the police as well. But we do not have any details on it. However, our office spoke to the principal and asked her to allow the student to write the exam.”

Surekha Sawant, principal of the college, was unavailable for comment. College superintendent D Kamble said, “The girl did not fulfil the attendance requirement. She did not even attend college for
almost two months.”
