A 32-year-old woman from Mahim landed in hospital after allegedly taking expired glucose-D water on Monday. Later, a complaint was registered against Wellness Forever Lifestyle Chemist from were the glucose D was purchased.

“Femiya Abdullah Sayyad started vomiting after taking a spoonful of Glucose D. We rushed her to hospital and the doctors blamed it on the expired glucose D. The shop had not only sold an expiry date product but also charged more for it. The MRP was Rs99, but they sold it for Rs110,” said Amit Kelkar from the Yuva Sena.

However, the medicine store denied the charge. Gulshan Bhagtiani, a board member of the Wellness Forever Lifestyle Group, said, “It is a fictitious complaint and we are going to ask for a proof. This is maligning.” Wellness Forever Lifestyle Chemist has over 50 shops across the city.

Prasad Danave, general secretary of Retail and Dispensing Chemist Association, said: “Selling an expiry date medicine is a crime but it is not done intentionally. Chemists should be vigilant. Wellness Group is a renowned chemist chain. The staff must be careless and the group has to pay for it.”

“The crime has been committed. As a chemist association, we are sending them a notice. We will also send letters to other chemists and pharmacy shops and ask them to be more careful. Carelessness that can cost a patient his life.” The chemist group may face suspension of licence from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

FDA joint commissioner KB Shende said, “The police are probing the case. Generally, in such cases, the chemist shop may face suspension of licence.”
