Additional sessions judge ML Tahaliyani questioned the means used by a cyber crime cell officer of Mumbai police to trace the 10 internet protocol (IP) addresses allegedly used during the 26/11 attack.

Inspector Mukund Pawar told the court that he had been asked by assistant chief investigating officer Ramesh Mahale to find out the geographical locations of the IP addresses, furnished by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Pawar simply logged on to a website — www.all-nettools.com — and it gave him the geographical locations of all 10 addresses.

Five were traced to Pakistan, while the remaining five were found to be proxy (bogus) addresses in the US (Chicago), Russia (Moscow) and Kuwait (Safal).

Before recording Pawar’s statement, the judge asked him, “Are they (the website owners) authorised to give geographical locations of IP addresses?” Pawar replied, “There is only one website available. It is an authorised one.”

The tech-savvy Tahaliyani was not convinced. “Normally, physical addresses of IP addresses are given by the service provider,” he said. “The website owner can put them up, but it is a question of privacy of the computer owner. This is possibly done without any authorisation. My problem is how far is it going to help us (in collecting evidence)?” Later, however, he conceded that since the witness had turned up, the court can take his statement on record.

As per the chargesheet, two of the IP addresses traced to Pakistan belonged to Colonel R Sadat Ullah and Khurram Shahdad, Special Communication Organisation, Qasim Road, Rawalpindi and Sajid Iftikar, 7th Floor, EFU House, Jail Road, Lahore. The court has issued non-bailable warrants against the three.

Mumbai police don’t have the names of the users of the other three IP addresses traced to World Call Network Operation, 16-3, Gulbarg, Pakistan.
