A 30-year-old jobless youth from a poor family allegedly killed his wife and two daughters before inflicting injuries on himself, after raising suspicion about his wife’s character on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at his residence in Hiraman Barne chawl in Thergaon.

While the youth, Satyam Hanumant Kumbhar, was admitted to a local hospital, the deceased were identified as his wife, Chandrakala (28) and daughters Akshata (5) and Vaishnavi (11 months).

According to the police, Satyam and Chandrakala married 10 years ago in their hometown in Karnataka and had three daughters.

Senior police inspector Ganpatrao Mandgulkar of Hinjewadi police station said, “Satyam had been jobless for the past few months and had heard disturbing stories about his wife’s character. As a result, he had a dispute with her several times. Following this, his two brothers-in-law brought the couple to the city for a job two months ago. However, Satyam remained jobless.”

On Wednesday morning, Satyam’s two brothers-in-law went to work with the wife and daughter at home. At 1 pm, they returned home for lunch to find the door locked.

Mandgulkar said on knocking the door, Satyam opened it and attacked them with an axe. The two brothers pushed him inside the room and locked the door from outside. They informed their neighbour and the police about the incident.

The police found that Satyam had assaulted himself and rushed him to Birla Hospital. The police also discovered the three bodies in the room.

Deputy commissioner of police, zone (IV), Sanjay Jadhav, said Satyam was out of danger and would be shifted to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital at night.

One of Satyam’s brothers-in-law, who works as a labourer, said the youth, whose third daughter was in Karnataka, was an alcoholic and was frustrated with life.
