Byculla police on Wednesday arrested a man for allegedly strangling a 22-year-old maid servant in the servant quarters toilet of a diamond merchant’s 14th floor flat in Byculla after she rejected him.

“Rakesh Vishwakarma, 21, also a domestic servant at diamond merchant S Sawla’s flat for the past four years, was arrested for strangulating Varsha Baikar with her dupatta,” said police inspector Manoj Saindre of Byculla police station and added that he had been remanded in police custody till August 8 by the local court on Thursday.
Varsha, originally from Dapoli in coastal Ratnagiri district, was working at the flat for the past five years. Her body has been handed over to her parents for the last rites,” said Saindre.
The incident took place on Tuesday at around 5pm. Sawla’s family members found Varsha lying unconscious in the toilet of their servant quarters. They took her to Price Aga Khan Hospital where she was declared dead before admission. Suspecting foul play, the doctors informed the police. The body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem where it was revealed that she was strangulated to death. Accordingly, the police registered a case of murder.
The police then interrogated Sawala family members and Vishwakarma. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and admitted that he was in love with Varsha for the past three years and wanted to marry her.
However, she neither accepted his love nor wanted to marry him. In a fit of rage, on Tuesday at around 4pm, he confronted Varsha and used her dupatta to strangle her to death, added Saindre.
