Jayant Pawar, the nephew of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and the owner of Metachem Manufacturing Company Pvt Ltd (MMPL) which has been charge-sheeted by the Karnataka CID for alleged involvement in the Belekeri iron ore scam, is yet to react to the charges.

The son of the NCP supremo’s brother Madhavrao, Jayant also owns the Solaris enterprise which runs eight high-class gyms in prime localities of Pune. On Friday, Jayant failed to respond to repeated calls and text messages from DNA for a comment on the action by the Karnataka CID.

Most famous among the Solaris clubs are the 100,000sqft facility of Solaris Sports Club in Mayur colony and the 35,000sqft Solaris Sports and Leisure Centre (Club Solaris) in Mundhwa. Club Solaris was in the news last month after the tragic death of a 22-year-old youth due to drowning. The Mundhwa police then registered a case of negligence against the club manager and life guards.
MMPL, the charge-sheeted company, was founded by Jayant’s father in 1964 as a manufacturing unit for graphite and graphite-based applications. According to the company’s official website, about 90% of its products are exported to a large number of European and Central American countries.
A sister concern of the company is Ajay Syscon Private limited, a joint venture of the US-based Syscon International Inc engaged in the manufacturing of metallurgical and process control instruments.
A familiar figure in Pune’s upper-crust party circuit, Jayant’s Land Rover SUV is also a talking point in the city. He is married to a German expat and has two children.
