After jaundice claimed the lives of two young women in a month’s time, the civic body has realised that they may be facing an epidemic-like situation in Worli.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent a notice to the builders of Panchshil Housing Society at Worli Naka to shift the sewage line beside the water tank, which, residents say, has led to the icterus onslaught. Built by Lokhandwala Builders, the society houses 400 families in four buildings.

Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner, directed the G-South ward office to take action against the builders. “I have asked the health officer of the ward to issue a notice to the builder. He will have to repair the tank and ensure that the residents get clean water,” said Mhaiskar.

DNA has been reporting about the jaundice outbreak in the society, with several resident suffering from the disease. On February 23, Kavita Aitla lost her life to the disease. A month later, Vrushali Jayant Pawar, 26, who was into her sixth month of pregnancy, also succumbed to jaundice.

Residents say they have been getting contaminated water for over a month. The civic body’s medical department team took samples and found that the water was not fit for consumption. A medical camp was held in the society and chlorine tablets were distributed, but it made no difference.

“The building is private, and the water connection of the society is unauthorised. So, the builder will have to repair the tank,” said S Gadkari, assistant municipal commissioner, G-South ward.
