Senior journalist J Dey had a premonition about his death, said his wife Shubha. In her statement to the crime branch, she said he had told her he would die in a month. But she didn’t know then that this wasn’t just some paranoid guess of his.

She told officers that Dey had been unwell before his death. On May 5, he told her that he won’t die of the illness, but will die for sure in a month. On June 11, he was shot dead by Chhota Rajan’s men in Powai. Dey told the same to two of his close friends, and had even asked one of them to perform his last rites.

Shubha said he used to talk in code while speaking to his sources on the phone at home.

On May 30, Dey had gone to Aksa beach with his wife and in-laws. Shubha said he kept getting calls on his mobile phone, and looked disturbed. When she queried him about it, he refused to share anything.

On June 7, Dey left to meet Vinod Chembur, and told Shubha he was going to get information about some bookies from him. Dey returned home at 12.30am. Shubha said he had had some drinks with Chembur, and looked worried, but he told her he had a headache and went to sleep.
