Senior journalist J Dey’s shooters had their masks firmly in place; so well, in fact, that even their relatives and friends had not inkling of their role in the shooters’ plan.

It was only when the police landed at the doorstep of shooter Nilesh Shedke’s cousin on June 26 that he realised his motorcycle was used to carry out the crime. Ditto the reaction from relatives and friends of other shooters, Anil Waghmode, Mangesh Agavne and Sachin Gaikwad, whose bikes were also taken.

Shedke’s cousin bought a Unicon motorcycle (MH-01-AF-8843) for Rs35,000. But it was registered under the name of the real owner as he had a loan pending with a private bank. As Shedke frequently borrowed this bike, the cousin never thought something was amiss when he took it on June 11 to kill Dey, said a senior crime branch officer. “It’s only when the police reached my house that I came to know that Shedke had used my bike for the murder,” said the relative in his statement to the police.

Agavne reportedly skipped work on the day of the murder and made away with his best friend and co-worker’s motorcycle from his house. Like Shedke, Agavne had taken the bike away on several occasions, the wife of the co-worker, who was also a neighbour and a friend of Waghmode, had no reason to suspect his intentions when he asked for the keys. “When I got back home, my wife told me that she had given the bike keys to Agavne. It didn’t bother me, as he had done this before. The next morning, he came back and returned the bike,” said the friend.

Gaikwad used the bike of his brother-in-law. He had wanted to buy a bike in 2006. But when he couldn’t get a loan for it, he convinced his brother-in-law, who had all the necessary documents, to buy it under his name. “I bought a Bajaj Pulsar (MH-06-AH-4891) on his request. But, he was paying the instalments as he had the bike,” said the brother-in-law.

In the charge sheet, the police have also attached the statements of clueless relatives of other shooters, Abhijeet Shinde and Arun Dake, on how their mobile phones were misused to make calls related to Dey’s murder.
