The Aarey police have launched an inquiry against Aarey Dairy CEO, Arundhati Shelatkar, two police constables and a few others following on order given by the Borivli metropolitan court for reportedly renting out a room illegally at Aarey Dairy. The room belongs to the state government and is meant solely for housing Aarey employees.

The complainant, Kiran Poojari, 31,  had filed a complaint in the court earlier this year, alleging that she was forcibly evicted by the owner, along with the security in-charge of Aarey Diary, and two police constables, from the house given to her on rent in unit no 6 of Aarey Colony.

She had also alleged that the room belongs to the state and should only be allotted to dairy employees.

Poojari said, “I had approached a security guard, Rana Desai, at Aarey Dairy last year. He took me to one Abdul Hussain who owns a stable there. Hussain rented me the room against a deposit of Rs15,000, and a monthly rent of Rs2, 200.” However, no agreement was signed.

Poojari alleged that after a year, Hussain started pressurising her to vacate the room. She then approached Shelatkar to request her, in writing, for some more time to make alternative arrangements. “Despite meeting the CEO, the pressure continued,” she has alleged, adding that she approached the Aarey police station, but the officials refused to intervene saying it was a civil matter. She was evicted in July this year.

Poojari claimed that around 60% of the rooms at the Aarey Colony are illegally rented. The complainant has also alleged that Hussain refused to return the deposit amount, demanding that she produce proof of the payment made to him.

Poojari’s counsel Kshitij Mehta said the six have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including outraging the modesty of a woman, cheating, criminal intimidation and trespass.

Senior police inspector,  LK Tonpe, of the Aarey police station said the police have begun an inquiry following the court order.
