Indian Student Parliament to kick off today in Pune

The second edition of the Indian Student Parliament, largest gathering of student leaders from across the country, will kick off on Tuesday in Pune. More than 8,000 students are expected to attend the ‘Bhartiya Chhatra Sansad’ conference, being organised between January 10-12 by MAEER’s MIT School of Government and state government’s ministry of higher and technical education and ministry of sports and youth affairs.

The inauguration ceremony would take place at 4 pm with an array of dignitaries present such as cartoonist Padma Vibhushan RK Laxman, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s director general Irina Bokova, founder of Infosys Narayana Murthy, actress Nandita Das and others.

The three-day event would see sessions addressed and moderated by many world and national leaders like Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, chief ministers Nitish Kumar, Omar Abdullah and Prithviraj Chavan, Union ministers Shashi Tharoor and Ajay Maken, Liam Burns, president of United Kingdom’s National Union of Students, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope, minister for sports and youth affairs Padmakar Valvi, former chief election commissioner TN Seshan, young leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora and Anurag Singh Thakur.

The summit would see student leaders deliberate on subjects of national and international significance with policy makers.

“The event is meant to motivate young future leaders to participate in nation building,’’ said Rahul Karad, executive director, MIT group.
