Students of HR College are not ones to wash their hands of hygiene in the canteen and play the blame game. They know they have as much a role to play in maintaining it as canteen operators.

And so was born the college's Rotaract Club's own hygiene for kitchen initiative on campus. Leaflets on the dos and don'ts while maintaining canteen hygiene have been distributed by club members to canteen staff and students to make them aware of the importance of hygiene.

They haven't stopped at that. The students have also given out hand gloves to food handlers at their canteen. The staff has also been told about important measures to maintain hygiene, like when they need to put on and take off  the gloves, their use and maintenance, and when to get a new pair.

Dinesh Sajnani of the college's Rotaract Club said, "When the IIT-Bombay's food poisoning case made the headlines, we were shocked. Though we do not eat our everyday meals at the canteen, like at a hostel mess, we regularly frequent our college canteen. After reading a lot about the need to maintain hygiene in the kitchen in newspapers, especially DNA, we didn't want such a situation here. That's why we initiated this hygiene campaign at our college canteen. The authorities' support really made the way easy for us."

According to Rahul Batra, another member of the club, the leaflets were distributed among college students not only to create an awareness, but also to keep regular checks on canteen operators. "We have not stopped at telling canteen workers about the importance of hygiene. Like us, even other students should feel the responsibility of maintaining hygiene. The leaflets were distributed so that all should personally ensure that the canteen staff is maintaining hygiene. The leaflet also tells students to help keep the canteen clean by not littering around."

Samir Hate, a canteen worker, said, "These students have been doing different innovative things in the college campus as well as in the canteen. This move has really made the difference. Students have become more vigilant after reading the leaflets. The use of hand gloves has added to our credibility."
