The mortal remains of former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman Homi Nusserwanji Sethna were today laid to rest here as per Parsi rituals.

Sethna, who was the guiding force behind India's first nuclear test died at his Malabar Hills on Sunday night.

The last rites were conducted at the 'Doongerwadi Tower of Silence' in South Mumbai and the prayers were held in the afternoon.

Those who attended his funeral include chairman of Tata Group Ratan Tata, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission  Dr Srikumar Banerjee, Director, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Dr RK Sinha, former Indian ambassador to the US Ronen Sen, former Municipal commissioner Jamshed Kanga (who served in the department of Atomic energy), Sethna's son Rustom and daughter Meher Dadabhoy among several others.

The 86-year-old nuclear scientist had made vital contributions to nuclear material development and production over the entire nuclear fuel cycle and during his tenure as AEC Chairman (1972-83), the Peaceful Nuclear experiment  (PNE) at Pokhran was carried out successfully on May 18,1974.

Ronen Sen said Sethna's demise marks the end of an era and he was the last of the great pioneers of Indian atomic programme.

He was hand picked by Dr Homi Bhabha, the father of Indian nuclear programme, to serve as his principal deputy and acted
as head of the atomic energy organisation during his absence.

"His inspirational leadership during the period as chairman of AEC motivated young scientific community to take the programme forward as envisaged by Bhabha during the technology denial regime," he added.
