Hitendra Thakur holds sway in Vasai-Virar civic body polls

Former MLA Hitendra Thakur proved he continues to hold sway over Vasai region in neighbouring Thane district as his Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) emerged a clear winner, bagging 55 of the 88 seats in Vasai-Virar municipal corporation polls.
           
The first polls of the Vasai-Virar municipal corporation held yesterday saw around 40% turnout and sporadic incidents of violence.
           
The two powerful groups, lead by Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Vivek Pandit and Thakur, were locked in a battle for the 88 municipal wards.
           
Pandit, Shiv Sena-backed MLA, floated a front, Jan Andolan, which bagged 19 seats.
           
Independents won 19, Shiv Sena three, Congress two, BJP and MNS one each.
           
Around 55 villages are opposed to the idea of being part of the corporation.
