MMRDA body to hold workshops for corporators on heritage structures.
The heritage society of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Tuesday decided to make a list of new sites in the metropolitan region which can be termed as “heritage sites”. The society has decided to carry out a survey of the entire region for finding places which have heritage value.
According to Ashish Shelar, BJP corporator and member of the heritage society, the meeting had a consensus about the need to find out more heritage sites in the city. “It was decided that the society should carry out a detailed survey of not just Mumbai city, but the entire metropolitan region for finding such sites. The survey will then be compiled into a list of new heritage sites and the list will be handed over to the urban local bodies (ULB), including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The society will also send a proposal to the authority for providing funds to the ULBs for protection and conservation of these heritage sites,” said Shelar.
“There may be a number of sites, such as churches, other places of worship, or old monuments which often go unnoticed. The heritage society will be making a list of such sites,” said Shelar. According to officials present in the meeting, it was also decided to carry out workshops for corporators of all the ULBs in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) to make them aware of the heritage sites in their respective wards. “The corporators have a good local connect and can come up with many sites which have the potential to be included in the list,” informed an official. It was also proposed that the heritage society, after carrying out a detailed survey, will come up with a proposal to fund the conservation of these sites.
“The proposal is to be cleared by the state urban development department,” added Shelar. The meeting was headed by MMRDA metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana and those who attended included conservation activist Vikas Dilawari, retired IAS officer DM Sukhtankar among others.
