Heavy rains push up Mumbai lake levels

The lake levels saw an increase of 7,038 million litres of water in the past 24 hours starting 8.30am on Friday to 8.30am on Sunday, civic officials said.

Steady and continue downpour over the past one week has increased the water levels in the lakes supplying water to Mumbai. The lake levels saw an increase of 7,038 million litres of water in the past 24 hours starting 8.30am on Friday to 8.30am on Sunday, civic officials said.

Presently, there is 5,82,613 million litres of water in all the lakes as compared to 2,96,707 million litres last year, they added. 

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the city and its suburbs have received about 51% of rains of the season. Rainfall in the catchment of these lakes has also been satisfactory and the officials hope that the lakes will get filled up to the required mark. 

Upper Vaita rna and Bhatsa lakes have observed good rainfall in last week. Tulsi, the lake supplying potable water to the city has already started overflowing from July 18. Modaksagar, a lake supplying potable water to Greater Mumbai has started overflowing from July 20. Last year, this lake was started overflowing on July 27.

The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rainfall at a few places of Mumbai and districts of Thane and Raigad over the next 24 hours.
