The Shikrapur police have arrested a 40-year-old headmaster of the Dingrajwadi Zilla Parishad School in Shirur taluka for allegedly harassing his woman colleague with obscene words and gestures.

Hanumant Ramdas Harel was arrested under 509 of IPC, relating to insulting the modesty of a woman. He was remanded in magisterial custody by a Shirur court for 14 days.

Following a complaint against Harel, other women teachers also came forward and complained about Harel’s bad behaviour. The Shikrapur police said about 12 teachers, including women, are working in the school.

Speaking to DNA, sub-inspector Sangram Patil said, “On March 4, Harel allegedly called the complainant, showing undue interest in her. The lady refused to have a relationship with him and also told Harel not to call her again."

According to the complaint, Harel then began using obscene language and insulting the modesty of the married teacher repeatedly. Angry with this, the complainant discussed the issue with her husband and a complaint was lodged on Thursday night.

“After filing the complaint, we arrested Harel from his house in Hiware village,’’ Patil added.

A year ago, the Shikrapur police had registered a complaint against Harel for allegedly keeping a sharp-edged weapon with him without licence.
