The next time you even consider throwing out the rule book when taking a suburban train, be on your toes. The government railway police (GRP) have booked 664 people under various sections of the Bombay Police Act and Indian Railway Act during their ongoing safety week drive.

Those arrested include 57 ‘stunt’ performers, including 18 minors, 11 persons, including four women, for travelling in a coach reserved for the physically-challenged, 18 for travelling in the women’s coach, 78 minors for ticket-less travel and 66 beggars, said deputy commissioner of the railway police GL Bhandare.

The peg of drive, launched on January 2 by Mumbai GRP commissioner Prabhat Kumar, is to ensure the safety and security of women commuters in local trains and to instil a sense of commitment in the GRP personnel. The campaign will continue till January 9.

If a woman travelling in a local train between 8.30pm and 6.30am finds no armed cop in her compartment, she can contact the GRP control room on 23759283/ 2375901 or the railway helpline (9833-331111) or the RPF control room at 23200400 with details of the name of the train, the station and the position of the compartment. A constable will board the compartment at the next station.
