The state government has spent Rs76 lakh on the Adarsh inquiry commission in the first six months since the panel was appointed to look into the multi-crore scam.

With 22 staffers, the highest number given to any commission, most of the expenditure has been towards their salary. Apart from this, the remuneration of the two commission members is Rs1.60 lakh each per month.

Counsel for the commission Dipan Merchant also recently wrote to the government, asking for his fees to be raised from Rs40,000 per appearance to nearly Rs1 lakh.

The commission has also got an extension up to January 7, 2012. This has been the second extension it has got. According to a Mantralaya officer, the commission is expected to get at least one more extension of six months.

It includes two class I officers, two class II officers, three assistants, six clerks, three stenographers, and four peons. The government spends Rs8 lakh per month on their salaries, said officials. They added that the government had to spend a huge amount on initial infrastructure to upgrade the office space.

“The state has been liberal while appointing the two-member commission headed by former HC justice JA Patil. None of the commissions appointed so far were given a staff of more than eight people. The space given to it is also the biggest of those given to any state-appointed inquiry commission. The state had given options such as Bandra Kurla Complex, Wadala and Nariman Point while choosing the office space,” said the officer.
