The state home department has passed a government resolution ordering the police to take stringent action against fake NGOs, which carry out illegal activities in the name of human rights.

The GR dated June 4 has been sent to the director general of police, Mumbai police commissioner and all police stations in the state. It was issued following an order passed by the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) in February this year.

The MSHRC passed the order after hearing a case filed by Prakash Sheth, a businessman from Mumbai. Sheth had filed a case against an NGO which was extorting money from people in the name of human rights.

After the hearing, MSHRC concluded that there existed parallel and bogus NGOs and human rights bodies doing the business of extortion and blackmailing for which strict action was absolutely necessary. The MSHRC, in its order, said if no strict action was taken against such unscrupulous and anti-social elements, they would continue to cheat gullible victims by misusing the name of the commission. DNA in its issue dated May 4 reported that the commission had asked the government to take action against fake NGOs.

The MSHRC directed the government to take stern action against such NGOs. Following this order, the government through its GR on June 4 has empowered all police stations across the state to take stringent action against fake NGOs, which use the name of the human rights commission illegally and victimise innocent people.

Sheth, the man who is credited with unearthing the nexus, said, “The party time for anti-social elements running extortion rackets under the garb of being human rights organisations is over. Now that the government has asked the police to take action, I urge the citizens to be fearless and come forward to lodge complaints against blackmailing or threatening by such fake NGOs.”
