Girls outshine boys in HSC exam, 30 per cent students fail in English

While Mumbai registered the highest passing percentage of 76.67, Nagpur recorded the lowest at 47.45. The pass percentage in Pune division was 71.9.

PUNE: The Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board on Friday announced class XII examination results for eight divisions.

Around 10,21,581 students had appeared in the examination in different streams conducted by the Board in eight divisions -- Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati, Nasik and Latur.

While Mumbai registered the highest passing percentage of 76.67, Nagpur recorded the lowest at 47.45.

Division-wise percentage of pass is as follows: Pune 71 per cent, Nagpur 47 per cent, Aurangabad 64 per cent, Mumbai 76.67 per cent, Kolhapur 68.7 per cent, Amaravati 51 per cent, Nashik 60.28 per cent and Latur 64.46 per cent.The combined passing percentage was 64.25. The examinations were held in March, 2007.

The pass out rate was 64.25 compared to last year's 64.26, Board Chairman Vijayasheela Sardesai told reporters.

Among regular students (those appearing for the test for the first time), girls beat the boys -- 79.10 per cent of the girls passed while 70.07 per cent of the boys made it through.

Of the 10,21,581 students who appeared for the test, 6,56,334 students passed.

Across the state, 19 junior colleges recorded a zero pass percentage while 35 colleges registered cent percent results.

As usual, English was the nemesis, as around 30 per cent students failed in the subject. In all other subjects, the pass percentage was above 85 per cent.

Pass percentage stream-wise is science 83.37 per cent, arts 65.13 per cent, commerce 81.71 per cent and minimum competency vocational course (MCVC) 63.53 per cent.

Interestingly, the marksheet this year bears the mother's name as well as the father's name.

From this year, the Board has done away with the merit list with a view to reduce tension among the examinees. However, each division would announce the names of toppers in their respective areas, she said.

In Pune, Deval Shivani Sanjay topped by securing 95.33 percent while Rasal Roshni Gyandev and Sheikh Nazim Abdul Sattar secured second and third positions with 95.33 and 95 per cent marks respectively.

Terming the results as steady, Sardesai said girls outperformed boys in the examinations by recording a passing percentage of 71.12 compared to the latter's 59.12.

Surprisingly, Mathematics, considered to be a tough subject had the best passing percentage of 83.83 and English had the lowest of 69.85 among a total 18 subjects for which the examinations were conducted, she said.

Replying to a query regarding introduction of grading system in the Board examinations, Sardesai said, the CBSE and ICSE, which had done away with the merit list system many years ago, were giving both the marks as well the grades.

"It is still under consideration and may be we will take a decision in this regard before the next Board examinations in February/March 2008," she said.

Also, Class X exam result can be expected sometime after June 15 (RPT June 15), she said.

According to the results declared by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Friday, Kulbhushan a student of the vocational stream of Sathay Mahavidylaya scored 571 marks out of 600.

Prashant Kulbhushan Sahani has topped the general merit list of the Mumbai divisional board of the Higher Sceondary Certificate (HSC) examination by securing 95.17 per cent marks, the results of which were announced on Friday.
  
Niti Satish Khadapkar from S S & L S Patkar College, who topped among the girls in the division with 570 marks (95 per cent), stood second in the general merit list followed by Aziz Moiz Arsiwala of Jai Hind College, who scored 569 marks (94.83 per cent).

A total of 1,93,079 students appeared for the examination as 'fresh candidates' out of which 1,59,085 candidates successfully passed out with 82.39 pass percentage.
  
In a departure from its earlier practice of announcing the full merit list, the Board this year just released the names of the first three toppers.

The result of Nasik division was 60.28 per cent, Nasik board president Gurunath Kanthe, said.

In HSC examinations, held in March 2007, 1,16,613 students were enrolled from Nasik board while 1,14,995 of them appeared for the examinations and 69,318 of them were declared successful.

The Nasik board comprises districts of Nasik, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar.

In Aurangabad, the pass percentage was 73.38.

Girls outshone boys with the passing percentage of 77.96 as compared to 71.03 per cent of boys who cleared the examination in the region.

Kulkarni Veena Vijayrao of Bal Vidyamandir Jr College, Parbhani, of science stream, topped the general merit list.

Jehurkar Prasad Praphularao and Jain Harshal Deepak Kumar, both belonging to S B College, Aurangabad, (vocational stream) secured second and third position in the general merit list of the division.

A total of 84516 students appeared for the examination at 223 centres spread across Aurangabad, Beed, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli districts of the division.

A total of 62,017 students cleared the examination.

In Solapur the passing percentage saw a decline for both boys and girls in the HSC exams. 65.39 per cent candidates have cleared the exam in this division.

The percentage of boys passing is 59.56 and for girls it is 76.32.
