A pile of garbage is what the Hajuri family, residing in Bhavani Peth area, has to walk through to get into or out of their house everyday. The waste is not cleared regularly, and is dumped there by neighbours because small garbage collection cart is stationed outside the gate.
Hussain Hajuri told DNA he had complained to the local civic authorities about it. A couple of months ago, he was admitted to KEM Hospital as he was suffering from malaria.
“The piled up garbage in front of my house is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. The local slum residents are careless while dumping the garbage,” he lamented.
The Bhawani Peth ward officer of Pune Municipal Corporation, Mahadev Gaikwad, claimed that the collection of the garbage is done everyday from that spot.
“I have also been sending ghanta gadis to collect the garbage every morning. People should have sense to give the garbage to the ghanta gadi, instead of dumping it out on the road. We have also provided people in that area with special garbage buckets so that they collect garbage in that and give it to the collection person,” he argued.
The Bhawani Peth ward officer has also placed a small trolley so that people can dump the garbage in it. “The land is owned by Buddha Vihar and so we cannot place a huge garbage dump in the area, so we requested the management and have taken permission to put up a few small trolleys for people to dump the garbage,” Gaikwad added.
The ward office had also printed some pamphlets to inform people about sanitation and garbage dumping locations and procedures. “What more can the corporation do, if the people themselves don’t understand that one should not litter near someone’s door,” Gaikwad stated.
