The railway police personnel patrolling the Kurla railway station on Sunday night, the day of Ganesh immersion, arrested a gang of four for stealing mobile phones from devotees during the Lalbaugcha Raja procession at Chinchpokli.

“We have arrested Rahul Pandya, 23, Rajesh Kharwa, 28, Asif Sheikh, 22, and Mohammed Farooq Sheikh, 22, under sections 379 (theft) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. All are residents of Mumbai. The police also recovered 15 stolen mobile phones of various brands from them,” said Shivaji Dhumal, senior police inspector of Kurla railway police station.

All four were remanded in police custody till Wednesday by the CST railway court on Monday.

The railway police personnel, who were checking commuters’ bags, found Pandya and his three associates alight from the second class compartment of a Thane local and go towards the exit in a hurry.

The police personnel intercepted them and during the frisking found five mobile phones. When the police asked them about the phones, they confessed to stealing them during the crowded Lalbaugcha Raja procession at Chichpokli on Sunday, Dhumal added.
