Drug inspectors of the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have seized a huge stock of spurious drugs from a godown in MIDC, Turbhe. In a raid conducted by the FDA’s Thane arm, tablets and capsules, which were being manufactured without license, were confiscated.
Drug inspectors Manjit Rajpal and Vijay Singhvi, along with assistant commissioners Ram Banarase and Mohan Kekatpure, had been keeping a watch on Ruby Organics Pvt Ltd for illegal manufacture of drugs. “When our team searched the company’s premises on Sunday, the managing director of the company, Rumy Ravi Kumar, was found illegally manufacturing two drugs—SD 15 capsules (marketed by Serum International, Pune) and Prazisam Plus (marketed by Wockhardt Ltd, Mumbai). The cost of the drugs seized is close to Rs10 lakh,” said FDA Konkan division joint commissioner PR Uttarwar.
According to Uttarwar, the two drugs are trademarked products of Dehradun-based Ruby Biotech Ltd. “From preliminary investigations it is evident that the company was cheating by using a similar name,” added Uttarwar. He said that officials also found a large stock of packing material, aluminum stripping rolls, granules ready for filling, filled capsules ready for packing, finished drugs, and machinery in the firm’s compound.
FDA commissioner Dhanraj Khamatkar said, “It is obvious that the manufacturer has no license for these products. After completing investigations, we will initiate legal action against the company.”
