On the third consecutive day of their crackdown on adulterated mawa and other spurious material, food inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and civic body raided a shop in Dadar (West) and confiscated 1,052kg mawa worth Rs1.92 lakh.
The mawa was brought in 51 containers and each container can carry 25kg, said SS Deshmukh, assistant commissioner, FDA, on Tuesday.

“The mawa consignment was brought to Mumbai from Gujarat in Loksiddhi Express. Our officials had specific information about the mawa being brought to Shiv Kumar Vijay Kumar Mawawala on Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar (West),” he added.
FDA officials took six samples of this ‘suspicious’ mawa and sent them to the laboratory for testing.

“Besides Shah Vijay Mawawala, the mawa was to be sent to four other outlets in the city — Nandlal and Sons, Shivkumar Vijaykumar Mawawala, Rajesh Mawawala and Mathuradas Shyamlal Mawawala,” Deshmukh said.

After taking the samples, the mawa was sealed and returned to the distributors. “They cannot sell the product in the open market until the samples are cleared of any adulteration such as sugar or soda or any other material,” informed Deshmukh.

“This seems to be an organised racket wherein mawa is being brought from Gujarat and sold in the city. We are making inquiries with five persons in this regard,” said police inspector Rakesh Sharma of the Crime Branch Control.
