Dumped by grandma, 3-year-old calls 'maa...'

The three-year-old girl, who was abandoned by her grandmother last week at Cama and Albless hospital, misses her mother and calls out to her, said the workers who take care of her at the hospital.

“She doesn’t cry a lot and is not difficult to handle. But she does keep saying—Aai —all the time,” said a hospital worker, who was taking care of the child.

The girl was abandoned last Wednesday. She was suffering from high fever and after her admission her grandmother disappeared from the ward. The hospital then lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police station. “The girl is stable now and is taken well care of by the hospital officials,” said Dr Rajshri Katke, the superintendent of the hospital.

The staff has taken a liking to the child and even bought her a pair of clothes. The social service department also handed over two pairs of clothes for the child.

“The police have not been able to trace the child’s parents. The grandmother had given a wrong or incomplete Kurla address. There is no contact number,” said Dr Katke. The police will search for the parents, if they are not found, the child will be handed over to Child Welfare Committee, she added. During this period, the child will be taken care of by the Hospital authorities, she said.
