The international drug mafia, in order to hoodwink the Indian intelligence services, has started smuggling drugs to and from India through Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, which impose capital punishment on those in possession of drugs.

They route drugs through these countries, risking their lives, as agencies in India do not keep a close watch on travellers on these routes, said a senior intelligence officer.

The officer said a smuggler coming to India from an African or a South American country does not take a direct flight to India. Instead, he travels via Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesia. The African and South American routes are under the vigilance of the drug controlling agencies, so they use this risky method which helps them transport drugs to India without being caught.

“It has been observed that in the past six to seven cases, where people were nabbed trying to smuggle drugs out of India, they had their flights going to their destinations via Malaysia or Indonesia. Also, a few people who were nabbed by the officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs had come to India using the same route,” said a senior official from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

The NCB and AIU officials recently nabbed a woman, a Cameroon national, and recovered heroin from her. She had a connecting flight from a Southeast Asian country to South Africa but was nabbed at the Mumbai airport.

International drug smugglers mostly smuggle cocaine into India, which has very high demand in Mumbai, Delhi and a few other cities.
