Officials from the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police have arrested a suspected member of an interstate gang supplying brown sugar to the city and other states.

Acting on a tip-off, the ANC officers laid a trap at Mumbai Central bus depot and arrested Sikandar Khan, 25, a native of Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday afternoon.

Khan was carrying 500gm of brown sugar in a bag. The contraband is estimated to be worth Rs50 lakh in the international market. He was to deliver it to a city-based drug peddler, the police said.

Inspector Anil Jadhav of the ANC said: “Initially, Khan refused to tell us where he got the drug from. But he later broke down and confessed that he had brought it from his hometown in Madhya Pradesh. “We are now interrogating him to find out who the receiver of the consignment was.”

According to Jadhav, brown sugar is generally supplied to the city by gangs operating from the drug-infested Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh and Khan could be a member of one of these gangs.

In the past also, the ANC has seized drugs like hashish, brown sugar, and marijuana being brought into the city from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The governments of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh allow poppy cultivation but only by farmers who have availed of permits from the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). But it is believed that many others illegally cultivate poppy which the CBN is not informed about and then sell it to drug traffickers operating in various states.

Khan has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and has been remanded in police custody till November 27.
