City youngsters comprising students and working professionals came on the streets recently to voice their demands for hundred per cent bio-diversity plans for Pune.

“The Youth to Youth Foundation and Green Pune Movement organised the rally so that all Punekars along with the youth could protest against construction on hills in and around the city,” said Ameya Jagtap, founder member of Youth to Youth.

The Green Pune Movement has been active since 2005, which vows to protect hills and maintain bio-diversity.

The movement is active under the mentorship of Mohan Dharia (former Union minister and green activist), Madhav Gadgil (eminent scientist and member of National Advisory Council), Satish Khot (president, National Society for Clean Cities), Aneeta Benninger (executive director, Centre for Development Studies and Activities), Amol Palekar (Film actor and director), Prashant Inamdar (activist) and Vandana Chavan (former mayor, Pune and NCP, city unit president).

Chavan said, “Unfortunately, our youth don’t get the right platform to voice their opinions but I feel such rallies are the right way to make the government understand what the youth wants.”

“Whether it is the environment or metro rail issue, we have to come forward and express our opinion to make the government officials realise what their priorities should be,” said Inamdar, welcoming more youth involvement in such rallies and activities.

Ved Bhandare, a student of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, expressing his support to save city hills, said, “The vanishing green cover of the city hills has reached an alarming stage. We have to come forward to stop the situation from getting worse.”
