The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and Association of State Medical Intern (ASMI’s) token strike resulted in cancellation of nearly 478 surgeries on Friday across city hospitals.

However, the doctors went ahead with emergency surgeries. The strike also had an impact on OPD patients as the doctors managed to see as many as they could between protest marches.

Nearly 1,500 resident doctors went on strike, supported by around 650 interns who were demanding a hike in their monthly stipend. The interns get a stipend of Rs2,550 and their counterparts in other states get paid more than Rs6,000.

“We didn’t want to cause any inconvenience to the patients, hence we continued with the OPDs. Our only aim was to remind the authorities about our demands,” said Dr Pankaj Nalawade, president of MARD in KEM hospital.

KEM hospital had 29 surgeries compared to 163 surgeries it has on a normal day. JJ hospital had 12 major surgeries and seven emergency operations.

“We had to stop routine surgeries for the day. Only emergency cases were taken in,” said Dr Sandhya Kamat, dean, Sion hospital. Sion hospital cancelled 110 surgeries and had 10 emergency surgeries.

Authorities claimed that though they are ready to meet MARD’s demand, the doctors have to wait till the Budget session is over. Dr Pravin Shingare, joint director, Directorate of Medical Education, said, “We are positive about increasing security for doctors. We are also considering the other requests by MARD.”
