Taking the eco-drive a step further, DNA will soon be distributing 5,000 paper bags to its readers to create awareness and promote eco-initiatives in people’s daily lives.

DNA is taking this initiative in partnership with Green Yatra, an NGO that works for creating and promoting environment awareness.

“We are into environment protection and conservation and often conduct workshops for this. This initiative was taken up by us as we thought it will help improve the environment. What we are doing is we have set a deadline and will be making these bags by September 15. We have kept seven people dedicated for this job who put in around five hours on a daily basis. The idea is to also tell people that they paper can be recycled and not wasted,” said Durgesh Gupta, director of Green Yatra.

For the same, DNA has collected around 1,000 kg of papers from various readers in the run up to the Ganpati festival. “This is actually our second leg of demonstration through action eco-drive. We feel that when we actually do it, it works better. We wanted to spread the message and reach out to much larger mass. The reason we went for this kind of campaign was that the very physical act of giving a paper and giving paper bag in an individual manner creates a lasting impression in people’s mind. The bags will be given to people who will be winning eco-ganesh awards,” said Gautam Dalal, marketing of DNA.

Environmentalists have lauded DNA for the eco-friendly initiative .

Dr Ashok Joshi, an environmentalist, said, “It is a really a nice thing. If all bags that are used are made like this, it will solve the city’s problems. We should discard and not use plastic bags. It is time that we opt for eco-friendly material. There are many things you can make from paper pulp too. Already many people are doing this like making Ganesh idols. Some even make furniture out of them. NGOs should now try to go a step further and teach people how to make papier mache idols.”
