A day after DNA’s report on Andheri (E) residents being taking up the cudgels against the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Reliance Infrastructure chief Anil Ambani for the mountainous debris from the Metro-1 construction work lying unattended on roads, work begun on Friday on clearing the Marol Naka (Andheri-Kurla Road) of the debris.

Residents had threatened, in a letter, to carry and dump the debris in front of the entrances to the MMRDA and BMC offices as well as Ambani’s residence if they fail to remove the dirt from the roads in the next two days.

“We are grateful to DNA for highlighting the issue of debris piling up. Because of this, the Metro-1 authority started lifting the abandoned debris at the Marol Naka on Friday evening. The debris had narrowed the road, blocking traffic. But the work should be fast-tracked for the public’s convenience,” said Godfrey Pimenta, a resident of Andheri (E).

He insisted that the the authorities should clear the place regularly till the metro work is complete. “They should not show a lacklustre attitude in undertaking public work”.

Pimenta alleged that the authorities concerned were sitting on their repeated complaints, which forced the residents to issue their warning.
