The Vishrambaug police arrested two men in two separate cases of cyber crime. A resident of Phursungi was arrested on Sunday for allegedly uploading derogatory profiles of Shivaji Maharaj, Jijamata and Shahajiraje Bhosale on a social networking site.

The suspect, identified as Tejal Goovindrao Puranik, 29, hails from Solapur. The police booked Puranik and an unidentified person under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and the Information Technology Act, 2008.

Puranik was produced before the court on Sunday and remanded in police custody for two days.

Senior inspector Rajendra Sawant told DNA, “The suspect runs a cyber cafe in Solapur and is well educated. After we gained the IP address and the suspect’s mobile number, we got two addresses, one of Solapur and the other of Pune. Our team arrested him red-handed at his residence while he was operating the site.”

Arguing for seven-days’ police custody, the assistant public prosecutor told the court that the motive behind the crime is unknown and the police need to find out whether any organisation is working to create enmity between various communities.

In another case, the Vishrambaug police arrested Sandip Tulshiram Dive, 36 of Mumbai on July 29 for allegedly creating a profile,  ‘I Hate Ambedkar’ on the social networking site Facebook and uploading derogatory comments and a photo of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

He was remanded in a day’s police custody till August 1.

The city unit leader of the Republican Party of India, Parshuram Wadekar, had lodged a police complaint on February 12. According to the police complaint, Dive created the profile using the computer at the office where he worked, Hunter Douglas India Pvt Ltd in Mumbai.
