After years of delay, work has finally begun on the local train corridor project to facilitate direct locals between CST and Uran in the next three years. The Central Railway has placed work orders for more than Rs25 crore to build the two-line corridor for extending the suburban line from Panvel to Uran to boost connectivity to the new airport.

Once the line is ready, it should take commuters one hour and 45 minutes on average to reach Uran from CST. The Uran line is expected to be ready along with the new airport at Panvel.

A senior official said the delay was caused as Cidco had stopped work for some time to review options. But the problems had now been sorted out and work had begun on full swing, he said, adding, the new line would connect the existing harbour line at two points.

Giving further details, the official said one arm would go to Nerul and the other Belapur. Both these arms would converge at Kile about 3km from Nerul and Belapur, and the straight double line would go on till Uran.

This line is in addition to the proposed fast corridor on the harbour line that is expected to begin soon.

Work has begun now and should be complete by 2015 when the airport will be ready. The Uran suburban railway will not just be a boon for citizens going to the airport, but it will also offer connectivity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, one of the country’s largest shipping ports. And keeping the future growth in mind, the railways and Cidco are planning infrastructure for 12 to 15-car suburban trains.
