A former clerk in the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army, Shailesh Jadhav, and Saeed Ahmed, alias Mohammed Desai (51), a “spy” of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI),  were acquitted by the court of chief judicial magistrate Suchitra Ghodke on Friday.

Both men had been accused of violations of the Official Secrets Act, 1923. Ghodke ruled that the police had laid a fake trap to implicate the duo in order to avoid their duty and dragged them into a bogus case.

Desai had been arrested in 1999 for allegedly spying for the ISI. After being convicted in the case, Desai had pleaded guilty in 2007 and was awarded 7 years of rigorous imprisonment on October 4, 2007. However, Desai served eight years in jail as an under trial prisoner. He was released when the court ordered the Pune police commissioner to deport him to Pakistan.

But when the deportation process was on, Desai went missing. Desai’s lawyer, Vidyadhar Koshe, told DNA, “The city police failed to deport Desai to Pakistan and the Pune Police was served a contempt of court notice. In response, the Pune police filed a revision petition in the sessions court challenging the direction of the lower court to deport Desai to Pakistan.”

On February 15, 2008,  the police arrested Shailesh Jadhav, accusing him of travelling to Kolkata to supply a secret document to Desai. The Pune police even sent a team to Kolkata to bring Desai back to Pune.

Clerk booked for cheating institute of Rs3.77 cr
The Bund Garden police have booked Mehjabin Warimani, a junior clerk of the Neville Wadia Institute of Management and Research, for allegedly duping the institute to the tune of Rs3.77 crore. According to the police, Warimani, a resident of Khadki, was assigned the responsibility of collecting fees from students and issuing receipts to them. Warimani allegedly swindled the institute to the tune of Rs3.77 crore either by fraudulently writing lower amounts or not making a carbon copy of the receipts.

She allegedly misappropriated the money between 2004-10. The incident came to light in 2009 when some students complained that they had not received the receipts for the monies paid by them. Senior inspector Suhas Nadgauda of Bund Garden police station told the media that when the institute authorities in 2010 had asked the students to pay the remaining fees, they were shocked and showed the officials receipts of full payment.
