Corporator of Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, Vishwanath alias Dada Ramakant Sawant (40), was shot dead in Sangli city on Friday evening.
The deceased corporator was a close aide of the rural development minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Jayant Patil
The incident has sent shock waves in Sangli, Kupwad and Miraj. A strong police force has been deployed.
Popularly known as Dadya, he was standing in a chowk near the Civil Hospital when a gang of four people fired four rounds from a revolver and stabbed him with a sword. Dadya was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead before receiving any medical treatment.
The superintendent of police, Ravindra Shisve, visited the spot. Dadya was a history-sheeter, with cases of murder, assault and ransom pending in court.
He was elected to the corporation in 2008 from ward number 69 on a ticket from Maha Aghadi, which is presently ruling. It is conglomeration of the anti-Congress parties and groups led by Jayant Patil.
The unidentified assailants are still at large.
