A police constable, attached to the local arms wing in Tardeo, has been arrested for stabbing his wife to death at their house on Thursday night.

Shatrughna Meshram, 40, killed her in front of their daughters in a fit of rage over suspicion that she allegedly had an extra-marital relationship with a collegian at her hometown Nanded.

The police said Meshram, who lived at the police quarters in the MIDC area in Andheri (E), picked up a quarrel over it with wife Kavita, 25, around 11.30pm on Thursday. Things got out of hand, and he picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Kavita in the abdomen and the chest right in front of their daughters, Vishakha, 8, and Sonali, 6.

The frantic daughters ran to the neighbours, who rushed Kavita to a hospital. But she was declared dead before admission. The police were in the mean time called in.

“Kavita had gone to her native place this June, where she met a collegian and allegedly had an affair with him,” said Inspector Mohan Waghmare of the MIDC police station.

While the couple tried to keep the relationship under the wraps, Kavita’s daughters saw the two together one day. “They told Meshram about it, who tried to convince Kavita to forget the collegian,” said Waghmare. But, Kavita reportedly refused to let go of him and often fled to her hometown to meet him.

“Meshram said in his statement that she had decided to settle with the collegian and used to pick up a fight with him over wanting to leave. After that, the issue was brought to the notice of the panchayat at her native place. Although she returned to Mumbai, she refused to do household chores,” the Inspector said.
Meshram’s alleged marital tension had affected his work. “He didn’t report for duty in the last month,” said the police.

But neighbours didn’t agree with the constable’s version. They claimed that Meshram is an alcohol addict and spent all of his salary on liquor. “He frequently beat up Kavita and when we went to calm them down, Meshram screamed at us that he did not want outsiders to interfere in their family matter. He sold his fridge and television to spend on liquor,” said a neighbour.

“Meshram had not even paid the electricity bills in the last one-an-a-half years due to which the power supply had been disconnected,” added another neighbour. “The kids used to study in the building’s passage. Around a week ago, he borrowed the connection from a neighbour”.
