After the civic body’s decision to compensate those injured and kin of those who died due to trees falling on them, the corporators want to compensate those who suffer injuries after falling into open manholes.

The corporators have suggested that the civic body should tie-up with an insurance company. Congress corporator Vinod Shekhar had forwarded the notice of motion in the civic house for discussion and final approval.

Tushar Jadhav, 11, died after he fell into a 30-feet deep uncovered manhole at Mariam Nagar in Worli last month.

Shekhar demanded that the BMC should compensate the victims, as they suffer due to BMC’s negligence.

“Sometimes these people are from very poor families. In such cases the BMC should support them,” he said. “The BMC can tie-up with any insurance company, which can manage the compensation according to the victim’s loss.”

“Accidents due to civic staff’s negligence are increasing. During monsoon, there were many cases of trees falling and some people got injured while some died due to that. Now, cases of people falling in manholes are also on the rise. It is BMC’s duty to cover the manhole properly,” Shekhar said.

Ashish Shelar, BJP group leader in BMC supported the move. “Such cases can come under the consumer protection act. The civic administration can be dragged to court for this negligence,” he said.

The civic body is contemplating the suggestion. A senior civic official said, “It is a policy matter so we have to place it before the civic general body for approval. Then we can implement it.”
