College student killed in mishap in Pune

In a major road accident, Apurva Keshav Malthankar (18), a standard XI student of Marathwada Mitra Mandal College (MMCC), was killed in a road accident at around 4.30 pm on Friday in Nasrapur.

A gang of seven friends, who had bunked classes to visit Bhubaneswar on three bikes, were returning to Pune when the incident happened.

The deceased's friend Mayur Datar (20) of Kondve Dhanade in New Kopare has lodged a complaint against one of his friends, Sujit Sudhir Dalvi (20) of Kothrud.

According to the police, Apurva and her friend Pradnya Shelar, both from Sadashiv Peth, were riding pillion with Dalvi, when the suspect applied brakes on his Pulsar that skidded 10 feet and inflicted injuries on the trio. The victim later succumbed to her injuries. The complaint was lodged at the Rajgad police station on Friday.

According to the police, the suspect is doing his engineering studies from Sinhagad College. None of the students were wearing helmets.

The suspect was arrested on Friday and was granted bail by judicial magistrate (first class) on Saturday.

2 killed in separate accidents Two men lost their lives, while one person was injured in two separate accidents on Friday.

In the first accident, an 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run case. The deceased has been identified as Prajwal Prakash Ghule, a college student. The incident took place in the morning, when an unidentified vehicle hit Prajwal while he was on his way to college near Hadapsar. Prajwal died on the spot.

In the second accident, 31-year-old Irshad Shaikh was killed when a four-wheeler hit the victim's motorcycle from behind on Pune-Mumbai Road near Phugewadi at 11.45 am.

Shaikh, a resident of Budhwar Peth, was travelling with his wife Nuri (30) at the time of the accident. The couple was admitted to a hospital, but Irshad succumbed to his injuries on Friday, while Nuri's condition is critical.

Assistant police inspector Shaikh had lodged a complaint against four-wheeler driver Yogesh Gade (31) at the Bhosari police station. Gade was arrested and later released on Saturday.
