More than 35 lakh suburban commuters on the Western Railway will now get scientifically-purified water at stations.

The railways last week installed a reverse osmosis water purification plant at Bandra, a second in two months, the first one being at Mumbai Central, to provide purified water to its commuters.

The decision to install high-end water purifying machines comes in the backdrop of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee asking all zones to spruce up passenger amenities in stations especially improving sanitation and drinking water facilities.

“Commuters can now get scientifically-cleaned and purified water free of cost at railway stations without any effort. The reverse osmosis filters have a dispensing capacity of 300 litres per hour. It is a fool-proof method of water purification,” a senior WR official said.

Many remote railway stations along the city’s border have been using supply of tanker water for regular use and now with the railways setting up their own purification plants, the quality of water would be the best.

The plants would be monitored and maintained to sustain the hygiene levels.
