Chabad House, popularly known as Nariman House, will reopen in a new avatar — a Jewish education centre. The centre would host rabbis coming from Israel to impart religious teachings of the Jewish religion, said Chabad officials in Mumbai.

The decision to convert the building into an education centre comes almost two years after the terrorist strike. Although the Chabad Lubavitch movement which runs the centre had promised to open it soon, a shortage of funds is believed to have delayed the opening of the centre.

Before the 26/11 attacks, Chabad House was a sort of guest house with a prayer centre for Jews visiting the city. It was run by Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivkah. The couple was amongst the six Jews who lost their lives in the building during the terror attack. Their child Moshe, who was two years old at the time, survived the attack after he was rescued by the family’s maid.

Chabad House attracted Jewish visitors looking for Kosher food — cooked in accordance with Jewish dietary laws — that is otherwise not available in the city. The new Chabad House will continue to serve Kosher meals, officials said.

Chabad activities that are now being carried out from  a temporary centre may not move back to the renovated Chabad House. They are expected to be carried on from where they are at present. The room that was used by Moshe will be restored to its original state.

Moshe’s uncle, Moshe Holtzberg, who has been doing several rounds of Mumbai is the crucial person behind the rebuilding of Nariman House. He was not available for a comment. But, earlier, when Sandra Samuel, Moshe’s nanny was considered for Israeli citizenship, Holtzberg had told DNA:

“The family is also trying to make extensive efforts to build the Nariman House. There are some difficulties we are facing in terms of finances but the Holtzberg family will rebuild it soon.”
