Good news for tens of thousands of Mumbaikars who use the locals daily. The Central Railway’s lifesaver bridge is finally on track. The new foot overbridge at Vidyavihar station, near Kurla, is expected to take accident victims to hospital within the golden hour.

Accident victims are generally brought to the trauma centre at Rajawadi Hospital. Work on the bridge began earlier this week from the west side of Vidyavihar near Jolly Gymkhana and lands near Chittaranjan Garden in the east next to Rajawadi Hospital.

“The station was sanctioned a few years ago after huge demands from commuters. The 3.66m foot overbridge, which will directly land at the doorstep of Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, will help ferrying the injured faster than through the existing route, which requires an ambulance at the south end of station,’’ Viral Bhadra, a local activist said.

Golden hour is the period lasting from a few minutes to several hours following traumatic injury, during which there is the highest likelihood that prompt medical treatment will prevent death. It is well established that the victim’s chances of survival are greatest if they receive care within this short period of time.

The access to Rajawadi Hospital has been limited from one side via MG Road, delaying rushing of victims. “The new bridge will open up access from the other side and get in patients faster,’’ a member of Rajawadi Hospital committee said.

“We have set up a strong concrete base with steel girders over the passing drain in the east side. The platform of the base of the bridge is ready and now, work has shifted to the platform side. The bridge, spread over nearly eight tracks, will have a landing on the platform from east to west,’’ a site engineer said.
