The retreating monsoons have had an adverse effect on the Central Railway's (CR) suburban railway operations.

For two consecutive days, technical faults have affected the normal running of trains on the main line during the crucial peak hours, leaving the entire network behind schedule and commuters travelling towards the city in the lurch.

On Tuesday, two rail fractures-one at Thane and the other at Kurla-during the morning rush hours managed to delay trains until late afternoon and frustrate commuters. There were also two "unit failures"-accidental failures of two local trains at Kalyan and Thane, which caused delays.

On Monday, signals failed near Kurla and there were similar delays in central railway's services.

A senior official of the Central Railway said, "The weather conditions during retreating monsoons-thundering and lightning-affect train operations as the system is geared to function under the rains. The ballast serves as a natural spring, a sort of shock absorber, which will have to undergo maintenance only then can we expect services to improve and such problems avoided."
