Closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage helped the railway police catch a drug addict who had snatched a woman passenger’s gold chain inside a suburban train.

“We arrested Chandu Chauhan, 30, from the Sion Hospital Employees’ quarters on September 23 and recovered the 18gm gold chain from his room,” said senior police inspector Jitendra Rathod of the Wadala railway police station.

Chauhan has been remanded in police custody until Tuesday. His mother is a sanitary staffer at Sion Hospital, Rathod added.
On September 19, at 7.15pm, Antop Hill resident Kiran Dhal boarded the second-class ladies compartment of a Panvel local from GTB Nagar station. As the train was leaving the station, Chauhan jumped into compartment and snatched her gold chain.

Even as Dhal and the other women commuters screamed for help, he jumped off the moving train.

Dhal lodged a complaint with the Wadala railway police, who then collected the CCTV footage and they identified Chauhan.
During interrogation, Chauhan reportedly confessed that he would steal gold chains to facilitate his drug habit.
