The weatherman has predicted heavy rains in the next 48 hours. Thursday's heavy downpour that caught many Mumbaikars off-guard could just be a curtain raiser to what the weekend may have in store for the city.
The Meteorological department said that the upper air cyclonic circulation and the off shore turf will result in high intensity downpour. “Heavy spells of rain will be seen in the coming two days. Cloud patches are coming towards the city. This will lead to parts of the city witnessing good amount of rain accompanied with thunderstorms,” said VK Rajeev, director IMD.
In Thursday's rains, which should serve as a warning to Mumbaikars, the intensity varied from 150mm/hour to 180 mm/hour. The downpour that lasted for just four hours left the city waterlogged and flooded.
The downpour brought back fears of the July 2005 deluge. Panic spread among disaster management agencies after the city received over 70mm of rainfall within the span of an hour. The eastern suburbs were the worse hit by the downpour. Deonar recorded 66.3mm of rain, Chembur saw 73.7mm and Bandra Kurla Complex witnessed 62.2mm.
On an average it rained 73.1mm in the island city. The eastern suburbs saw 80.6mm rainfall and the western suburbs recorded 63.7mm. Heavy rain coupled with high tide at 3.12am made matters worse.
Water logging was seen at Coastal Colony in Chembur, Labour Camp in Sion, Taximen Colony in Kurla, Worli, Deonar, Hindmata and Arora Cinema in Parel. “We used over 94 water pumps to flush out the clogged water. After the tide lowered, the water level began to recede," said Mahesh Narvekar, chief, Disaster Management Cell.
The only silver lining was that Thursday's downpour and the consistent rain on Friday gave a boost to the water levels in the lakes providing water to the city. The total water level now stands at 6.43 lakh.
