With only four days of campaigning left, candidates from various political parties are making all efforts for a smooth election process.

Instead of depending on paid workers, they are bringing in relatives and friends from their home towns and different parts of the city. The candidates fear that the paid workers might ditch them at the fag-end of the campaign. They are now roping in the people they know, especially when they have to rustle up voters and set up help desks.

“It is better to have loyal people with you who work hard and know the candidate. Of course, there are party workers who work for the candidate’s victory,” said Rajshri Shirvadkar, a BJP candidate from Sion. “But it is better if you have more manpower and relatives and close friends play a big role. Some of my friends have spent money from their pockets for the campaign.”

Ganesh Kekane, an Independent candidate from south Mumbai, does not depend on paid workers. “They only care how much money you have paid them. Instead of depending on paid workers, I have called some of my relatives from the villages. They are happy working with me and there is no need to pay them.”

Political experts said most candidates who hire people for campaigning know that the workers are only paid hands. They would do the same for anyone pays them more money. “On the vote day, only loyal party workers and friends work hard to bring in voters,” they said.
