The board of directors (BoD) of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) on Thursday served an ultimatum to the PMPML management to provide a concrete plan by Monday to effectively run the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) in the city.

Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, chairman of standing committee Ganesh Bidkar and municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade were present at the meeting as its directors.

It was reliably learnt from those attended the meeting that the directors expressed strong displeasure about the state of affairs of the BRTS project, started in 2006 and being implemented on the Katraj-Hadapsar route.

Three consultants have prepared reports about how the BRTS should be managed.

The civic body has proposed to implement the project on various roads of a total length of 116 km in the city. Politicians and civic activists have been criticizing the project for its poor implementation.

The civic body has prepared the infrastructure for the BRTS by using funds available under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM) while the PMPML is given the responsibility to manage it.

In the BoD meeting, the directors demanded that the management provide a plan for the effective management of BRTS. When no concrete plan was put by the management, they issued the ultimatum that the plan be presented in the meeting on Monday, in which a decision would be taken on the BRTS.

Meanwhile, independent corporator Ujwal Keskar said the BRTS project is a failure even after spending Rs1,400 crore. Now, the PMPML and PMC are blaming each other. The responsibility of the failure has to be determined.

He said the PMC has spent Rs674 crore, which is more than the approved budget for the BRTS. Now, a white paper should be published on the project.

A senior office-bearer of the PMC said the government has approved Rs1,032 crore for the BRTS project. If it is not implemented properly, the money would be a liability of the civic body.
