From covering the Bandra-Worli sea link with a 420-metre-long towel to letting motorists enjoy a “toll-free” day, companies are flooding the state road authority with proposals to cash in on the popularity of Mumbai’s latest landmark to sell their products and services. And they are ready to shell out big bucks for it.

But the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is not willing to sing along as such promotional events could hamper vehicular movement on the sea link, which is currently drawing only 40% of the capacity traffic.

But the proposals keep pouring in. Quick Gun Murugan, the protagonist of the movie with the same name, wanted a ride on the 4.7-km Rajiv Gandhi sea link to promote the film, MSRDC officials said.

A towel company wanted to display a 420-metre-long towel on the bridge and a confectionery company distributed chocolates at its entry, the officials said.

“We are getting a lot of such offers. An advertising agency has asked us if it can let motorists celebrate a ‘toll-free day’ on the sea link. The idea is that motorists will not pay the toll and the agency will foot their bill,” a senior MSRDC official said.

A newspaper and a company involved in the construction of the sea link want to organise a cyclothon on it to promote environment, the official said.

But Satish Gawai, vice-chairman and managing director, MSRDC, isn’t impressed. “The thumb rule is simple. Any activity — even if done by bearing the toll cost — that makes us stop the traffic will not be permitted. I have made this very clear,” he said.

Gawai is not even in favour of the sea link being used for the marathon. “One must understand that the primary purpose of the sea link is to ensure a faster commute. Any activity hampering motorists will not be permitted, even if it gets us some extra bucks,” Gawai told DNA.
