Ravi Datta, 40, was so angry with a coach attendant in Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express for seizing his illegal liquor crates that he used to throw stones at the train every time it passed Vangaon for three months.

“Ravi Shankar Datta, 40, a bootlegger was booked under Section 153 (Endangering safety of passengers by wilful act) Indian Railway Act on Thursday. The resident of Vangaon village in Dahanu taluka, has been remanded to judicial custody for five days by the Vasai court on Friday,” said Mahim Swami, chief security commissioner of the Railway Protection Force (Western Railway) at Churchgate.

Datta was earlier arrested by the RPF personnel at Dahanu in 2008 in stone throwing case. Datta, who hails from Ambawadi in Nagpur, was earlier working in an electrical items manufacturing company at Nagpur.

However, the company closed down a decade ago and he moved to Mumbai in search of a job. When he failed to find a job, he started bootlegging at Andheri by smuggling liquor from Daman at a cheaper rate and subsequently selling it in Andheri. Later, he shifted his base at Vangaon, where he used to buy liquor from Daman and sell it south Gujarat at an exorbitant rate, said Swami.

During the interrogation, Datta revealed that he was caught by the coach attendant of the Ahmedabad-bound Shatabdi Express at Vapi station in October 2011, while he was carrying the liquor worth Rs5,000.

The coach attendant then informed the railway police personnel who arrested him and seized the liquor.

Rajendra Rupnawar, Divisional Security, commandant of the Railway Police Force, Western Railway, said that in order to take revenge, Datta decided to throw stones on the Shatabdi Express for the last three months.

A few times, the stone also hit the Mumbai-bound Rajadhani Express, which passed the same route around the same time.
